Devotionals & Scriptures

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

Matthew 25:35-36

Am I My Brother/Sister's Keeper?

The answer to this question is an emphatic, YES! According to Matthew 25:35-36, we are to care for more than just ourselves. The well-being of others should be a priority if we are to be concerned for the issues that concern Christ. If we are following His lead, then we have certain obligations to fulfill from the heart.

Just as He cares for us, we are to care for others. The hungry. The thirsty. The stranger/foreigner. The homeless. Those whose clothing is tattered or worn. The sick. Those in prisons. The widow. The orphan. All of these people are worthy of compassion and love according to Jesus. If we stopped and took inventory of our lives, many of us would conclude that we have been blessed with more than we need. We have a home/apartment; not just one pair, but multiple pairs of shoes. Not just one coat, but several. We have a closet filled with clothes, much of which we don't wear. Jewelry, accessories, perfumes and colognes, yes, we have more than we need and many of our wants. We are blessed to have three meals (or more) a day. And we waste much of the food set before us. We have access to health care or someone to care for us if we take ill. Whether we realize it or not; whether we acknowledge it or not, our needs have been met.

Let us not be or become so self-absorbed and self-righteous that we check our humanity at the door and neglect our fellow man, woman, or child. Let us strive to hear those comforting, re-assuring, and encouraging words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Let us not be on the receiving end of the words, “Depart from me.”

Realize and remember you have been blessed to be a blessing.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Dr. Wendy

Prayer

Father, give us a heart filled with the same grace, compassion, and love that You have shown us through Your one and only Son, Jesus. Let us not forget our brother and sisters, whom we may not know personally, but are in need. Let us not overlook the children who cannot fend for themselves. Father, let us be sensitive to the needs of those without; those without food, clothing, shelter, a mother, a father, a sister or brother, or even a kind word, just as you have been faithful to ours. May we understand that we have been blessed to be a blessing and whether we have much or little we can still help others; the less fortunate. We can still show up as Your ambassador in a what appears to be a dark world for far too many. No matter how much we have or don’t have we can still be “a light” for those who are suffering. You have called us to be “a light.” Give us the courage and the heart to care for others as You care for us. Help us to do so with a sincere heart, not for show or out of a sense of obligation. Teach us and show us what it truly means to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

This is our prayer, in the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen!
